Co-Founder
I have had the pleasure of calling O’ahu home for the last 7 years. After graduating high school, I knew I wanted a hands-on, outdoors career that allowed to me to express my creativity and love for this beautiful ‘āina. Landscaping felt natural.
I have been in the landscaping business for almost a decade. I worked my way up from basic landscaping jobs to managing multiple crews and hundreds of properties. In 2025, I completed my Arborist Certification, which extends my expertise above the skyline. Starting Koa ‘Āina Landscaping is the next exciting adventure in my landscaping career.
I view landscaping as an art form rooted in restoration and care. As a self-taught nature photographer (the pictures on this website came from my camera!), I pay close attention to light, texture, and balance to create outdoor spaces that are comfortable, peaceful, built to last, and honor the natural beauty of Hawai’i. Whether it’s reviving a neglected plot or a shaping a welcoming yard, every project is an opportunity to malama ‘āina.
My love for koa started with one of my most prized possessions - a koa guitar. Koa is known for its strength and beauty, and being endemic it embodies that of Hawai’i. At Koa ‘Āina Landscaping, my goal is to create and care for landscapes that reflect this strength and beauty, while also giving back to the ‘āina and our community.

Aloha, I am Michael DeCaires and a Co-Founder of Koa ‘Aina. I was born and raised on the Island of Oahu, a Kamehameha Schools Alumni and a graduate of Hawai’i Pacific University.
I have been an avid soccer player my entire life and have always enjoyed being outside, from Mauka to Makai. While growing up, I found that I love plants and enjoyed working in the yard at our home. During college I interned for Paepae ‘O He’eia which changed my views and met amazing people that had a deeper passion for their surrounding community that I have never seen before.
When the internship was completed I set out for the workforce to gain valuable business experience so I too could provide compassion, care, quality and Aloha for the communities on Oahu like the amazing people I met during my internship. With over a decade of experience and knowledge between my Co-founder and myself, we are ready to provide quality Landscaping for Residential and Commercial properties while making sure we give back to our communities.
When the internship was completed I set out for the workforce to gain valuable business experience so I too could provide compassion, care, quality and Aloha for the communities on Oahu like the amazing people I met during my internship.
